Located in the Melanesian sub region of Oceania, the Fiji Islands are composed of 332 islands, 110 of which are inhabited. To get to Fiji you need to fly into Nadi Airport (NAN), the main international airport or Nausori Airport (SUV) in Suva, both located on Viti Levu Island and from there hire a Jeep to explore Fiji's main islands. Only a 15 minutes' drive north from Nadi, you will reach The Garden of the Sleeping Giant, an orchid garden that belonged to the holiday home of the late actor Raymond Burr (of Perry Mason fame). The nearby Koroyanitu National Heritage Park offers you a chance to hike to a waterfall, or visit one of the six traditional villages in the park's area. From Nadi you can take a boat to Denarau Island, before heading to the Mamanuca Islands, whose virginal sand beaches were the location of the movie Cast Away, or travel to the Yasawa Islands on a catamaran.  Driving your rental Jeep southwards from Nadi on the Queen's road you will pass the scenic Coral Coast. Halfway to Suva is the Beqa Lagoon, where you can dive with tiger sharks, or take a boat to Beqa Island to see traditional Fijian fire-walking. Suva is the largest city on Fiji, located on a peninsula, and a visit to the Fiji Museum and adjacent Thurston Gardens is highly recommended. Fiji's eastern shore offers you a chance to support sustainable tourism at the Natalei Eco Lodge, where you can watch a pod of dolphins swim up around Moon Reef or hike up Tova Peak.

 

You can take your rental Jeep from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island, on one of three ferry services. A direct route can be taken from Suva to Savusavu, Vanua Levu's main city. Savusavu is a popular yachting port, and the starting point of the eastern Hibiscus Highway, where you will find the remnants of colonial plantations. Heading westwards, take your Fiji hire Jeep to the Namena Marine Reserve, famous for its diving and snorkeling spots. Another option is to take a ferry from Suva to Ovalau, an island between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, where you can visit Fiji's historical capital of Levuka, a world heritage site, or travel to the crater of its dormant volcano. From Vanua Levu you can take a ferry to Taveuni, known as the Garden Island. Taveuni is mostly covered by the Bouma National Heritage Park which has three waterfalls, where you can see the exclusive habitat of the rare Tagimoucia flower, as well as being an exceptional bird watching site since no natural predators were introduced to the island. The Lau Islands, to the east, offer a chance to see undisturbed nature at its finest.
