Austria Rentals

Whether you are a culture aficionado, an adrenaline junkie or are looking for a sedate holiday, Austria has something for you. There is plenty of Old Empire charm left in the country's cities of Vienna and Salzburg, while the snowy peaks of the Austrian Alps provide ample opportunities for exercise- skiing, snowboarding and rock climbing. Located in the hub of central Europe, you're just a stone throw's away from the continent's capitals and tourist attractions, easy to reach from Austria with a cheap rented car. Austria's busiest airport is Vienna Airport (VIE) with an annual intake of 22 million passengers, while Salzburg Airport (SZG), Innsbruck Airport (INN) and Graz Airport (GRZ) handle passenger traffic of around a million passengers a year each.

Vienna, Austria's capital city is full of stylish architecture and sites of significant cultural importance. As part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and its imperial center since 1683, the city has distinctive baroque and rococo palaces, as well as the famous Ringstrasse. Vienna became during the early 19th Century a center of classical music, associated with Strauss waltzes and Mozart operas, and with famous coffee houses that served as intellectual meeting places for luminaries such as Freud, Klimt and Trotsky. From Vienna you can travel by rental car within a couple of hours to Budapest in Hungary, Brno in the Czech Republic and Bratislava in Slovakia.

Driving your low cost rental car from Vienna, it takes about three a half hours and to reach Salzburg on a route dubbed "The Romantic Road". Salzburg's name has been immortalized by its most famous son, Mozart.  The city's highlight of the year takes place during the Salzburg Festival in July, as befits a city where classical music is a central part of its heritage. Salzburg's charming scenery was also captured in the movie version of "The Sound of Music". Highlights of the city include the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the baroque city center, a UNESCO heritage site.

Taking your rental car onwards into the Austrian Alps, towards Innsbruck, Tyrol's capital, that can be reached directly via motorway 8 and A12 (crossing into Germany). We suggest you take an alternate route via Hallein, well known for its ancient salt mines, passing Werfen's impressive ice caves, and turn westwards on the B311. This route takes you to the Liechtensteinklamm- a narrow gorge leading to a waterfall, and following the road to Zell Am See you can take a relaxed walk on the See lake shore. A further detour via Lienz will take you driving along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Innsbruck itself offers you an opportunity to learn about local Tyrolean culture. Close to the Folk Art Museum is the Innsbruck Hofburg – imperial palace – a complex with a splendid baroque facade. From Innsbruck you can roam the Alpine area, as well as cross over into Switzerland, Italy or Liechtenstein and Germany.

From Vienna you can travel to Graz, the state capital of Styria and also Austria's second largest city and its modern culture and culinary center. Traveling southwards on the A2/E59, it takes about two hours to get there. Styria offers several wine routes, such as the “Glanzer Weintour", as well as ski resorts such as Tauplitz, Schladming in the winter and the Dachstein Glacier during the summer.
