Perth is the capital of Western Australia, a relatively new metropolis that grew during the last half of the 20th century as the result of the expansion of the mining industry. Perth is located on the banks of Swan River that provides a scenic background to the city. Walk around Kings Park to enjoy the river scenery, especially enjoyable during springtime when the wildflowers blossom. Visit the WWII heritage site of Leighton Battery Guns, underground tunnels that were dug out to protect the coast from attacks. You can rent a cheap car in Perth Airport, or from various locations in the city, and take it to Perth's beaches. Scarborough Beach is the most popular, but it's worth driving a few minutes north to Mettam's Pool and Trigg Beach or south to Cottesloe Beach to enjoy the beaches the locals favor. Alternately, you can drive east into Australia's outback to see Wave Rock, a rock formation that looks like a giant wave near Hyden.
