Travel to Cairns, the gateway of the Great Barrier Reef, to explore Australia's tropical northeast region. Cairns is a city in North Queensland, popular with Far Eastern tourists who enjoy shopping in the city center and nature lovers that want to travel to one of the fifteen National Parks of the region. The city's hub is the Cairns Esplanade, an artificial saltwater lagoon. Walk the Esplanade Boardwalk to get a taste of seafood and shop at its stalls, and enjoy the nightlife of Spence Street. Cairns is located only seventeen miles away from Green Island, one of the major attractions of the Great Barrier Reef. In Townsville you can visit its Reef HQ Aquarium, interact with wildlife in Billabong Sanctuary and dive at the Yongala wreck site. After a further three hour's drive south you will reach Airlie Beach, known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. Another day trip available from Cairns is to head westwards to the Crystal Cascades, where you can go swimming and drive over to the Mareeba Wetlands, a reserve where you will find an abundance of wildlife, including crocodiles and a bird sanctuary.
