Brisbane is Australia's third largest city and its fastest growing urban area. As the capital of Queensland, Brisbane has a vibrant arts and culture scene, interesting historic sites, several sporting venues and plenty of places to shop, eat and drink. Hire a cheap car in Brisbane to explore Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, or head inland to Queensland's National Parks.

Brisbane's central district, the CBD, is located on the north bank of Brisbane River, and at its center you will find the City Hall and its famous bell tower. A ten minute walk will take you to Commissariat Store Museum, the oldest building in the city that was built by convicts, and to the City Botanic Gardens that features exotic plants and pleasant walks. From the Gardens you can cross over to South Bank, home to the Cultural Precinct that includes the Gallery of Modern Art, the largest modern art collection in the country, and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. South Bank also has many restaurants and cafes, and in its vicinity you will find the South Bank Parklands. Fortitude Valley is another popular part of central Brisbane that has a very active nightlife and unique shopping areas. Roma Street Parklands is nearby, if you want to get lost in its topiary maze or sit by the lake. Alternately, head north from Fortitude Valley to Newstead House, one of the oldest 19th century buildings in the city that has a luxurious preserved Victorian interior.

Hire a  cheap car in Brisbane city center or from its airport to make your way around its environs. Start you day trip by driving to its suburbs - Mount Coot-tha which houses the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and a branch of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. From there take the M5 south to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the largest Koala sanctuary in the world. Travel half an hour west from CBD to St Helena Island, a site of the remains of a colonial period prison. From the nearby Manly Boat Harbour you can take an excursion to Moreton Bay Marine Park. Taking your cheap rental car further out of Brisbane, you can drive north to Noosa, a favorite destination on the Sunshine coast. Noosa beach is attractive to surfers, and Noosa National Park provides great sea views, from which you may spot a dolphin or whale in the waters. Drive northeast to visit the Bunya Mountains National Park, a pine forest that has abundant wildlife, passing the Wivenhoe water reserve. From Bunya you can travel  back west towards the coast, and climb one of the mountains of Glass House Mountains National Park. Another option for a drive out of town is to head south towards Sydney, and catch the waves on Gold Coast.
